SSO, or single sign-on, refers to a session and user authentication service that permits a user to use one set of login credentials to access multiple applications. SSO integrations are a fantastic tool to assist your university or business in streamlining user experience while ensuring that data is not compromised, and privacy remains at the forefront of your software solution. Here, the in-building and campus logistics experts at SCLogic discuss the various benefits of SSO, and what functionalities and integrations our team recommends.
What is Single Sign-On & How Does it Work?
As we stated above, single sign-on allows organizations to permit a user to use one set of login credentials to access multiple locations. As it relates to the usage of an SSO integration, there must be a service provider, user, and identity provider. In our case, we act as the service provider through our facilities management software, Intra. In essence, the user will access an authorized Intra application, which generates an SSO request. From there, Intra will direct the user to the SSO URL, where the identity provider or partner parses the SSO request, authenticates the user, and the user is ultimately logged into the application.
For clients using our Intra software platform, the intended use of SSO services provided by SCLogic is to allow SSO access to the Client Services Portal (CSP). For clients that want application integration that has an SSO access piece, we have made it a point to ensure that each SSO offering prioritizes security and ease of use. Our SAML2 SSO functionality within our CSP is a federal identity standard that allows secure web domains to exchange user authentication and authorization data. SAML provides a FIM, or federal identification mark, for web applications and is commonly used at universities. Our CAS, or Central Authentication Service SSO functionality validates a user’s authenticity by checking a username or password against a secure database, such as Kerberos, LDAP, or Active Directory.
What Are the Benefits of SSO?
SSO provides many benefits, especially for organizations of a large scale trying to improve their technology usage while maintaining ease-of-use for users. For managers who have access to a variety of platforms, having SSO avoids the confusion and frustration of remembering countless usernames and passwords. Furthermore, SSO helps avoid password fatigue, increasing security for your organization and reducing the likelihood of breaches. SSO provides a streamlined approach to working with a new platform, and for organizations that may have employees who have different levels of comfortability with technology, adoption rates will improve by the ease-of-use for SSO.
Did you know that 95% of cybersecurity breaches are caused by human error, and that data breaches exposed over 36 billion records in just the first half of last year? In addition, around 60% of companies have over 500 accounts with non-expiring passwords. With cybersecurity risks continually increasing as technology grows, acting reactively for your organization is not an option. Failing to protect your organization or university proactively opens the doors to breaches that may ultimately cost your company financially. Investing in adequate SSO integrations also allows for your employees to focus on many other important daily tasks, without the hassle of excessive cybersecurity concerns or IT requests.
